Why bind LangGraph tools to the gateway with tokens
When a tool node shells out or calls HTTP directly, each author invents their own secret handling. Unified retry policy at the tool boundary
Retries should not be reimplemented inside every node. Wrap gateway HTTP calls with one module-level policy: exponential backoff with jitter, a modest maxAttempts, explicit handling of 408, 429, and 5xx, and no blind retry on 401 or 403—those usually mean rotation, scope drift, or a wrong user. Log each attempt with graph name, tool name, attempt counter, and latency. When the gateway applies its own circuit breaker, surface the breaker state to LangGraph so the graph can branch to a degradation path instead of hammering the same call shape.

Schedule a lightweight probe every three to five minutes that runs curl -fsS http://127.0.0.1:18765/health with the same bearer token your tools use. In parallel, ship structured gateway logs to a file or collector and match lines that contain 401 or invalid_token. Feed both checks into one alert channel with a concise title such as “OpenClaw gateway unhealthy or token rejected,” because tunnel drops, process crashes, and bad rotations often arrive together and splitting them early creates pager noise. Operational FAQ
Port already in use (EADDRINUSE). Another listener grabbed the port—often a second gateway, IDE bridge, or stray dev server. Use lsof -nP -iTCP:PORT -sTCP:LISTEN, stop the duplicate, or choose a new port and update LangGraph base URLs, tunnels, and probes together. One documented port per profile prevents silent drift between the dashboard card and your graphs.
Authentication succeeds in curl from a shell but fails inside LangGraph. Compare UNIX users between your shell test and the worker, verify the token file path in the graph environment, ensure async code paths attach the header on every awaitable branch, and confirm the dashboard did not rotate the token while launchd still references an old path. Clock skew beyond a few seconds can also invalidate short-lived tokens—sync with sntp if you use narrow validity windows.
Retries amplify outages. Lower maxAttempts when downstream is clearly down, and let circuit breakers trip before LangGraph spends minutes in nested tool calls. Pair retries with idempotency keys for mutating routes when providers support them.
